A Couple of Life Drawing Sketchs
A couple of life drawing sketches I did over a month ago which would have been the last time I actually attended college. I haven't done any life drawing since summer of last year so it was good to do some any. However I'm not use to drawing the male figure need a lot more practice.

Todays Sketch 10th August 2014...
A quick experimental pastel painting using water with the soft pastels and painting with a brush. Didn't go exactly as I planned but never mind no harm done, not to keen on it but I suppose someone will like it…

Life Drawing 30th July 2014...
Those that know of my work know that figure drawing isn't something I do very well though I keep trying. This is the last week it is running at The Cambrian but it begins again in September, today was the first time I have had to draw a male model but it didn't go to bad considering. Maybe the last couple of weeks doing the sketch book nearly everyday has helped a bit, who knows?
Most of the drawings on the first page were 5 minutes apart from one which I was still sharpener my charcoal pencils. The second image took 30 minutes and the last took 40 minutes.

Observational Drawing: Garden Rock
Drawing of a garden rock the medium used is Charcoal and Charcoal Pencil, after doing some thumbnails I decided to draw the whole of the rock rather than just a section. The rock interested me with all its cracks and white lines going around it. I could do with adding more contrast especially to the darks, it seems like the fixative has greyed the darks down. The piece was done on A2 Cartridge Paper, the image below is a photograph of the drawing.

Sorry for Lack of Posts…
I seem to be really busy recently and haven't got enough time to get everything done, however I can spend up to 2 hours a night sometimes watching the soaps on TV. I've got two art courses going but I'm finding it difficult keeping up with both of them, might have to drop one I'll see how it goes. One course is just a basic foundation course which I've been doing for around 6 weeks and still haven't moved from using a pencil or charcoal but I love my paintbrush. On the other course we are now doing a portrait project which up to now I've only just done the research (need to get something done this weekend). Recently I've been to a couple of exhibitions with college which I enjoyed but on both occasions photography wasn't allowed. The first one was at Tate Liverpool Marc Chagall's Modern Master which is the one I preferred and could relate my work to more then Kyffin Williams VENEZIA Drawn to the Light at Oriel Ynys Môn. After saying that there was a couple of works by Claude Monet, Walter Sicket and one by Frank Brangwyn that I loved. A few of the images including the ones I've just mentioned can be seen here
Below I've uploaded some drawings, none of them are brilliant but it shows what I've been doing at college for the last few weeks (Measuring and Perspective). The rest of my work I've not uploaded as its just basic work and not worth the effect of uploading next on the agenda is value, whoopee…

Project 7: Townscape with Buildings and Figures
Different areas in Manchester City Centre.
Manchester Exchange Square was totally rebuilt in 1996 after the RIA bomb attacks; pubs were dismantled and re assembled in different positions. Around the Exchange Square you will find The Shambless pub, a new entrance to the Arndale Centre, Urbis, The Print Works, The Manchester Wheel, The Triangle Shopping Centre and the large outdoor TV screen. Market Street is a pedestrian zone bustling with shoppers which includes the Food Court, Arndale Centre and loads of shops on one main stretch which runs from Piccadilly Gardens to St. Ann’s Square. Piccadilly Gardens was transformed in 2002 it’s no longer a green open space area filled with homeless drunks drinking cider. If it wasn’t for the buildings surrounding the area unfortunately you would not be able to recognize it compared against Lowry’s Piccadilly Gardens (1954).
If you didn’t know Manchester or even if you do you couldn’t name all the squares and little areas with their own name in the city centre they all just roll into one its hard the distinguish where one starts and the other one begins. Other squares around Manchester are Albert Square, St Peter's Square, St Ann's Square, Motor Street Square, Catalan Square, Stephenson Square, Cathedral Gardens, Parsonage Gardens, Shambles Square, Crown Square and Great Northern Square even I don’t know a few of these.

Barton Arcades, St Anns Square.
This study is the entrance of Barton Arcades looking from St Anne’s Square in the city centre of Manchester. Barton Arcade is a Victoria building which has 3 tiers with a glass roof, the building is a grade II listed historic building. I have worked from photograph number which I took whilst in Manchester. I think the reason I did it was the one point perspective, I have used Conte Crayons I purchased a small box of four a while ago for a couple of quid as I wanted to see the difference between these and soft pastels but never got round to using them. All four colours have been used in this study, Black, White, Bistre and Sanguine on cartridge paper.
I like the feel of them how you can blend them like pastels but they are a lot harder. They also tend to stay on the paper better when you use fixative, when I use pastels with fixative the white and all the light colours tend to disappear and you have to re add them without fixative at the end. I didn’t draw an under drawing I just went for it and it took an hour or so to complete. Over all I like the Conte Crayons and will be investing into a 48 set rather than using pastels, the study isn’t brilliant but I can recognize where the study was from.Looking towards the top of Exchange Square. A study of the Manchester Exchange area is another study I used the Conte Crayons with but as my palette was very limited I had to add a couple of greens and a blue soft pastel into the creation. This time I have used some pastel paper which has more tooth then the cartridge paper of the previous study, the paper is also a bluey grey colour which I left for blank for the colour of the sky.
I thought it would benefit added a light source as there wasn’t much of one on the photograph. The tree I enjoyed doing it really stands out amongst the browns of the buildings. In the picture you see both new additions with the old buildings to the Manchester skyline. I have immensely enjoyed using Conte Crayons and like I said before will be buying more than just the four colours I have, but overall I don’t think I’ve done too badly for limited palette.
Printworks, Exchange Square. This is the finished drawing, a few things need to be looked at again and the placement of the people I’m not too happy with. The rest of it I can sort out when I use pastel or whatever medium I end up doing it in. I might just leave it as it is if I don’t get much further with it today, I really need to get on with the finished image and I don’t think this is going to be one I will be using. At the end of the day I can come back to this image and work with it another time if I feel the need to do so, but I must fix the charcoal before it all smudges.

Project 6: Acrylics Final Design
I had a look at the primary research which I took of Conwy Castle and decided I could use the one below with some cropping. I started out with vine charcoal on cartridge paper at the same size as the canvas board. I wanted to get a slightly different angle then the photograph has been taken more looking down on top, I also wanted the bridge to lead into the castle not just at a straight horizontal angle. Please Double Click the Images for Full Size Images
I went on to drawing the image with Vine Charcoal but rather then doing the full drawing I decided that I wanted to crop the image.
It didn't stop there I wanted to add a bit of colour to the image so I adding some soft pastel on top of the charcoal drawing.

Project 4: Building Study, Crown Inn, Stockport
The two sketches below are of The Crown Inn which is a pub in Stockport. This is the building I will be using for my Final Piece; the images show both sides of the building. The top one is a quick sketch I did on location and the bottom has been taken for a photo reference which I took whilst I was down Stockport.

Project 3: 5 Preliminary Studies with B/G (Study 1 & 2)
I am now required to do a minimum of 5 preliminary studies with the figure needs to relate to the background and surrounding space, then the final peice… Some of these you have seen before and have been changed, added a background etc, some of them are new.
Study One: This now has colour, it was a black and white pencil drawing as I didn't have the time to add watercolour to the image, also a background has been added.
Study Two: Has not been changed at all this was done with Charcoal in my last Life Drawing Class.

Project 3: Drawing & Painting Full Lenth Figure (W8)
I took the Charcoal Powder into the Life Drawing Class, this is my last Life Drawing class so no more Thursdays at college anymore :( I wanted to use Charcoal as it was the medium I choose to use in my first Life Drawing class which can be found here After looking at the drawing below and comparing it with the first drawing I think there has been a few minor improvements, well thats what I think…

Project 3: Full Lenth Figure (W7 @ Home)
Sorry I've not posted anything for a couple of weeks, we have had a few Bank holidays in the UK this month and this means no college on Fridays due to Good Friday and the so called Royal Wedding which I can say I was lucky enough not to see any of it !!! I will try and update a few things very soon, the finish Full Length project is due in less than a week and I’m nowhere near finishing also I’m supposed to have started the next project as well...
Below are a couple of Charcoal drawings I did the model were from the Virtual Pose 3 Cds. I first did an under drawing using charcoal powder mixed with water and applied it onto cartridge paper. Then I used a putty eraser to remove some on the marks and added another coat to make the shadow areas darker. They both turned out ok so I might try this in the Life Drawing Class at the end of the week...

Project 3: Full Lenth Figure (W3 @ Home)
The below is a piece I did at home not life drawing, the model was taken from the CD Rom Virtual Pose 3. It took rather longer than expected to complete, I'm going to have to practice with Charcoal. Apart from using it once in Week 1 of the Life Drawing I haven't used the medium by itself. The drawing I think went better then what I have produced up to now in the Life Drawing classes. I really struggle with hands and feet I find them really hard to do so I have not put any detail in them areas for now.

Project 3: Drawing & Painting Full Lenth Figure (W2)
This week is the my first Life Drawing lesson, 4 people out of our class have decided to do the Life Drawing project, so we have joined another class whilst we do our Life Drawing. There is also a possibility that we can also join the Life Drawing class on Thursday afternoon which I would prefer. I found the life drawing class really hard, it was the first time I used a stand up easel, the first time using charcoal and the first time in front of a model. Things didn't turn out as planned; even the measuring wasn't right however now the first one is out of the way let’s hope it gets better. Below are the two drawings that I did, I’m happier with the pencil drawing then the charcoal one.
