Copying Other Artists Work, Reproduction.

How do you feel about copying other artists work? I'm a art student trying to learn painting techniques I like looking in detail at the brush work and seeing how the artist has created the work. As long as you aren't selling the work and confusing the buyer, I personally feel you can learn a lot by doing this. Over the years I have copied a couple just for painting exercises in getting to know the medium, these particular works are well known and wont get confused with the originals as they are in deferent mediums.

Below are a few of the copies I have made alongside the original work, the originals are the first images .

Just recently I've look at another artist that creates similar paintings to myself, I really admire his work and wanted to look closer at his work. The painting I have copied is not for sale it is for me to hang on the wall and admire. My version is more worked on then the original and if you didn't know you might say the original is a poor rushed copy of my work. I have still painted the image with my own hands, they are a few differences along the way but the composition is basically the same. I couldn't afford the buy the original myself even if a wanted too I would rather spend the money on paint and blank canvases. I was just wondering how other people feel, personally myself if someone liked my work that much I would be honoured that someone reproduced the work as long as I got a mention somewhere and the painter wasn't getting a profit from my design..

I have put the original image first the artist is James Downie and his work can be seen here. The second image is my version of his painting.

I'll be looking forward to any comments left about reproduction…

Damaged Paintings

Woke up sometime last week it was too a really loud bang coming from my room, disaster had struck. One on the shelves with around 100 heavy art books on had falling down, books were scattered everywhere I suddenly realized I had work in my room that was below the shelf. I couldn't see them anywhere until I moved the books out of the way, unfortunately I had made them on canvas normally I would prefer to use canvas board. I've upload the damage, one of the painting survived this one was on canvas board but the others I don't think I will be able to patch up, what a nightmare…

I'm still alive…

Its been a while since I've uploading anything, note to self must upload stuff.. Anyway I've got a week off college so I will try and upload something but I must get some painting done. The course I'm on at the moment is doing my head, all I want from the course is to improve my painting and drawing however I haven't even picked up a paint brush in months. What I have done is not what I want to do and I'm in two minds if to carry on with the bloody thing, as I've been busy on the course I haven't even had time to do any painting at home. What I have been doing is 3D Art, Ceramics, Textiles, Photography, Print Making, Photoshop, Video Editing and Critical Studies nothing I want to do!!! I'll have to have a word after the break and tell them I've had enough its time to say something.

Anyway I wont go one I'll get some of the stuff I've produce uploaded, but don't expect any works of art…

UK P&P Prices Online Art Shops...

Awhile ago I mentioned that I use Artifolk when I required just a couple of items due to the fact that if you spent over £10 P&P was free.. However just to inform you that to get the free delivery you now have to spend £20 :(. Also GreatArt has lowered there free delivery to £25 from £40 so I've placed an order with GreatArt as they have a wider range of materials to choose from. Sometimes though you just require a couple of things and the P&P costs more then the items, that's when I miss the local art shops.

Start the New Course...

I've done no painting or drawing for the last 2 months since I last finished the last course I did, which I ending up getting a destination for every project which shows on the certificate :) The next course starts on the 23rd which is a week today; again the course is a full year. I’m looking forward to starting again I did have plans to practice over the summer break but life got in the way and now I have a week to cram it all in…

I’ve ordered a few new bits to play with Derwent’s Inktense blocks and pencils interested me as I’ve seen a few demonstrations on You Tube. The colours look so vivid compared to the wishy washy look of watercolours. I’ll try them out when they get here and post a few samples on here that’s if the scanner is still working not used it since the end of last course. You might be wondering what happened to the finished painting for the last project: The Crown pub in Stockport, Well I never got round to finishing it, but as soon as I do you will be the first to know..
