Todays Sketch 20th July 2014...

This is today's sketch the building is around 10 minutes walk away from me but did I bother getting up with my camera and go a photograph the building well of course not I wanted to paint. Since I've started this sketchbook I actually want to paint and draw I even look forward too it which I haven't felt like that for a couple of months. The building is St Therese of Lisieux in Abergele, North Wales which is a Catholic church, I know nothing at all about the building but I have always admired the shape of it and said I must paint that one day.

Been a log Time SInce I posted...

Thought I better post something as its been 4 months since my last confession. Finished college about 6 weeks ago and since then I haven't done much with a pencil or paintbrush. I have been going to Life drawing lessons once a week but the drawings aren't getting any better though, I'll have to practice more dig out Virtual Pose Dvds if I have too.

I have therefore decided to start a Sketchbook just to get me doing something at least one quick sketch a day. Those that know me will know I don't do sketch books so this will be interesting, I will post these once a week or so. Below are some of this weeks sketches, there are mistakes and ideas in the sketchbook this is what its for, everything will get posted good or bad. If I'm lucky one or two might get looked at again and created into larger oil paintings.

Copying Other Artists Work, Reproduction.

How do you feel about copying other artists work? I'm a art student trying to learn painting techniques I like looking in detail at the brush work and seeing how the artist has created the work. As long as you aren't selling the work and confusing the buyer, I personally feel you can learn a lot by doing this. Over the years I have copied a couple just for painting exercises in getting to know the medium, these particular works are well known and wont get confused with the originals as they are in deferent mediums.

Just recently I've look at another artist that creates similar paintings to myself, I really admire his work and wanted to look closer at his work. The painting I have copied is not for sale it is for me to hang on the wall and admire. My version is more worked on then the original and if you didn't know you might say the original is a poor rushed copy of my work. I have still painted the image with my own hands, they are a few differences along the way but the composition is basically the same. I couldn't afford the buy the original myself even if a wanted too I would rather spend the money on paint and blank canvases. I was just wondering how other people feel, personally myself if someone liked my work that much I would be honoured that someone reproduced the work as long as I got a mention somewhere and the painter wasn't getting a profit from my design..

Totally new painting on Canvas Panel

Instead of trying to fix the last lot of paintings that got destroyed with the collapsing book shelf I've decided just to get on with a new painting. I'm still waiting for the oil paints to dry on the damaged paintings so I cant really see if I can fix them yet. I was looking through some books I have of Manchester and Stockport and came across the image below from about 1895, I managed to read one of the posters which were advertising a Fireworks display at Belle Vue on Tuesday 04 September this would make the image from 1900 or 1893.

This is the original image I came across from a book titled Stockport: A History written by P Arrowsmith. The image is from an area known as Rock Row the only building left standing today is the dome shape which is from St Peter's Church.

 

I scanned the image from the book into Photoshop and made a grid to transfer the image on to a canvas.

 

As I just wanted to get on and get it finished ASAP I decided to get out the acrylic paint instead of using oil paints.

 

 

Below are a few photo images from different stages of the painting.

Below is the finish painting, I varnished the picture with a gloss spray before I took the image which was a big mistake. As you can see I have made the houses in better condition then the original photograph, I believe the photograph was taken not long before the buildings were demolished. Today the areas is known as Mersey Square in Stockport, I also moved St Peter's Church up slightly and added a few characters along the way (artists rights).

Damaged Paintings

Woke up sometime last week it was too a really loud bang coming from my room, disaster had struck. One on the shelves with around 100 heavy art books on had falling down, books were scattered everywhere I suddenly realized I had work in my room that was below the shelf. I couldn't see them anywhere until I moved the books out of the way, unfortunately I had made them on canvas normally I would prefer to use canvas board. I've upload the damage, one of the painting survived this one was on canvas board but the others I don't think I will be able to patch up, what a nightmare…
