Observational Drawing: Boot

I have chosen to draw an old boot with graphite pencil, I normally use a pencil just to make a quick sketch. Really this is the first time I've used it correctly for shading but it took a few days to complete. There is still a little bit more work to do in this drawing, I feel the highlights and shading on the top of the boot needs more contrast and hopefully I will get around to it when I have a few spare hours, other than that I’m happy with the outcome. The original drawing is done on A2 Cartridge paper, the below is a photograph.

Observational Drawing: Keys

This technique involved painting the support with Raw Linseed Oil. The Oil tinted the paper and made it transparent whilst it was still wet I draw a set of keys with graphite sticks. The Linseed oil made the graphite slippy which enabled me to use a cotton bud to blend the graphite.

Observational Drawing: Garden Rock

Drawing of a garden rock the medium used is Charcoal and Charcoal Pencil, after doing some thumbnails I decided to draw the whole of the rock rather than just a section. The rock interested me with all its cracks and white lines going around it. I could do with adding more contrast especially to the darks, it seems like the fixative has greyed the darks down. The piece was done on A2 Cartridge Paper, the image below is a photograph of the drawing.

3D Art: Carving from a block of Clay.

This is my first ever reduction carving carved from a block of cheese hard clay, this piece was influence by Henry Moore. I found the clay dried out quite quickly when working on, it was easier to work with at first but got harder as time went by. The last couple of images shows the piece after its been in the kiln its turned to a white colour rather than a stoned colour which I prefer.

3D Art: Head Head Sculpture.

Head Sculpture inspired by Phillip Treacy made from Cardboard, Matt Board a Garden Stick and glue. The head sculpture is 1.6 metres at its largest point; the design explores convex and concave forms. Unfortunately the sculpture didn’t last that long as the kitten thought it was a new cat scratcher and started to climb up the artwork. I was going to cover the sculpture up in Mod Roc to strengthen it or even PVA glue but I didn’t get a chance too. It took me hours trying to glue this thing together; all the long strips have been slotted through the circle parts. I was going to do it all in thicker cardboard but I ran out of the stuff and have to regrettably use mount board instead which is nowhere near as strong. I also burnt my fingers on half a dozen occasions with the glue gun which really put me in a uncreative mood.

At the end of the day I completed the brief but it hasn’t been the most successful piece in the 3D art briefs, I think to produce something this tall you require a helper but I designed this at night with no one around to help me. I didn’t even get a chance to take it into college due to the kitten destroying it, even if I did get the chance I wouldn’t have liked to take it to college on the bus. I think I will mark this on up as a failure and the lesson of the day is don’t build artwork that looks like a cat scratcher and leave it with the cat. To be perfectly honest I wasn’t really into the brief I’m not one to do any fashion design, there was an alternative brief but I thought the hat brief would have been the easier of the two.
